Cognitive behavioral therapy

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is based upon the idea that there is a correlation between thoughts, moods, behaviours and physical reactions and that certain ways of thinking can trigger, or 'fuel', certain mental health problems for example depression.

CBT tends to deal with the “here and now” and although it recognizes that past events play a role in shaping a person’s life, it does not dwell on them. CBT is a forward-looking treatment that aims to modify a person’s current thoughts/behaviours in order to function/feel better in the future.
CBT attempts to break downward cycles of negative and unhelpful thoughts that lead to adverse behaviours. The emphasis is on modifying behavioural patterns and ideas, which lead to psychological problems.

CBT has been shown in clinical trials to help ease symptoms of various mental health problems. For example, research studies have shown that a course 10 to 20 sessions of CBT is just as effective as medication in treating depression and anxiety disorders.
